This dark cabinet is one of the largest works.
A person of royal birth stares out from her green glass globe, standing guard over the trove of row upon row of bottles and vials below her.
Why would a person of her stature need to guard anything, unless she knows what the viewer does not?
There is tension as she almost dares you to touch her precious belongings.
On the verso, however, a veneer of tranquility prevails as a Black Swan floats upon a golden lake, into which someone has thrown a message.
Is the woman then, really a prisoner in a palace tower?
Has she unsuccess-fully tossed an urgent message for help out of her window, only to watch it sink into the swan's pond, beyond the reach of a potential rescuer?
Is she guarding the potions as we oritinally might have thought, or is she fearing them?
