"Wouda Napoleon"

2006.

Mixed media, 6.5 x 4.5 x 2 inches.

This cabinet warns of how we can become imprisoned by our own material possessions.

The woman, in this case, Napoleon's Josephine, is behind golden bars strung with beads, crystals, ivory and pearls.

Her palace is seen behind her in a vertigo perspective, and while she is surrounded by the trappings of luxury, she is also stuck peering out of a window, separated from others.

Solitude can be a two-way street, and while most of the gems move freely along the golden bars, the ivory bead is fixed permanently in front of her right eye, never allowing the viewer to determine her true expression--is she content with her predicament, or is she remorseful?

The pieces of mirror reflect back at the viewer whatever is being projected onto the work.

The verso is a cryptic message to the friend for whom this piece was made.
